About Koiled
Koiled makes military-grade coiled Kevlar lanyards — retractable safety tethers with a 265 lb (120 kg) breaking strain, trusted by military, police and prison services for over 30 years. The name is our own: Koiled is a brand, born from the coiled Kevlar construction that has defined the product since the beginning.
Born on duty in 1980s Northern Ireland
Our story starts with a serious problem. During the 1980s, police officers in Northern Ireland needed a way to guarantee their sidearms could not be lost or snatched. The answer was the Attach and Secure Lanyard: a braided Kevlar cord formed into a memory coil that stretched when needed, recoiled instantly, and would not break under any force an officer was likely to meet.
That original design worked so well it spread far beyond policing. The Koiled lanyard became NATO-codified and has been operationally proven in the world's most demanding environments — carried on service in the Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan and Bosnia — by military, para-military, prison services and special forces around the world.
What makes a Koiled lanyard different
Four decades on, the core design remains deliberately simple, because simplicity is what survives:
- Braided Kevlar cord — the aramid fibre used in body armour — with a 265 lb / 120 kg breaking strain
- Stretches to around 1,100 mm (43 inches) and recoils to a compact coil, through thousands of cycles
- No mechanism at all — no spring to fatigue, no spool to jam, nothing to maintain or fail. The cord is the system
- Interchangeable attachments — carabiner, snap clip, paracord loop and split ring — so one lanyard secures keys, tools, scanners, radios or knives
If you're weighing up how this design compares with spring-loaded retractable reels, our guides to Koiled vs Key-Bak and Koiled vs Gear Keeper cover the trade-offs honestly.
Who uses Koiled today
The same qualities that kept sidearms on duty belts now keep equipment attached everywhere gear loss has a cost:
- Police, corrections and security — duty keys, radios and equipment retention, the job the design was built for
- Warehouse and logistics operations — tape guns, barcode scanners and hand tools that cycle hundreds of times a shift
- Tradespeople — securing tools, knives and keys through the working day
- Everyday carry — keys and multi-tools for people who simply refuse to lose them
Wherever customers have needed irreplaceable, valuable or life-saving equipment safely attached — in every climate from desert to arctic — we have been able to make a lanyard for it.
