Nylon and kevlar look similar in a product photo. Three months of real use tells them apart: one is fraying at the clip and stretched out of shape, the other looks like it did on day one. Strength and stretch
Kevlar’s tensile strength is roughly five times that of steel by weight, and it barely elongates under load. Nylon is respectably strong when new but stretches significantly — useful in climbing ropes where you want energy absorption, a liability in a retention lanyard where stretch means a tool hitting the floor anyway and a cord that gradually loses its shape.
Abrasion: where nylon actually dies
Lanyards live against belts, zips, doorframes and vehicle trim. Nylon’s surface fibres cut and fuzz with friction, and every fuzzed strand is strength lost — the fray you can see at a nylon lanyard’s clip is structural, not cosmetic. Braided kevlar’s abrasion resistance is a large part of why it’s used in protective equipment; the braid wears its surface without giving up the strands that carry load.
Heat, UV and water
Nylon melts — around the temperature of a soldering iron or a disc grinder’s sparks — and degrades in prolonged UV. Kevlar doesn’t melt at all; it only begins to decompose around 450°C. Kevlar’s one genuine weakness is prolonged direct UV exposure, which is why quality kevlar cords use tight braids and why a lanyard that lives mostly on a belt or in a pocket effectively never sees enough sun to matter.
What about ballistic nylon and polyester?
Ballistic nylon is heavyweight woven nylon fabric — excellent for bags and covers, but it’s a fabric, not a cord technology; a “ballistic nylon lanyard” is a nylon strap with better marketing. Polyester stretches less than nylon and handles UV better, which is why it’s common in cheap neck lanyards, but its absolute strength and abrasion resistance are far below kevlar. For flat neck straps holding a conference badge, polyester is fine. For anything you’d mind dropping, it isn’t.
The verdict
